How Safe is Safe Enough? The Norwegian Background for the Reliability Calibration of the New Eurocodes

Invisible numbers – the safety factors of the design codes – determine the material use of everything we build. This project establishes the probabilistic background for the Norwegian National Annex to the second generation of the structural Eurocodes.

Background

Every structure in Norway is designed against snow, wind and other loads through the safety factors and load values of the Eurocodes. Set too low, they cost lives; too high, they waste materials and money on every single project. With the second generation of the Eurocodes, the national annexes must be rewritten – a rare opportunity to base the Norwegian safety format on an explicit, probabilistic foundation.

What we do

Impact

Design codes scale like no other technology: improve one number, and every structure built after it improves. The calibrated Norwegian safety format ensures that new structures are safe, economical and adapted to the Norwegian climate – today’s and tomorrow’s.
